HOW I LEARNED TO THINK & TRAIN LIKE AN OLYMPIAN: The Importance of Mental Skills for Musicians
General Summary:
Like athletes who spend a lifetime training for an Olympic race, musicians spend years practicing for auditions which sometimes last only minutes. However, most of us focus completely on musical preparation for these opportunities, even though the ability to perform at our best in high-stakes situations is largely a result of mental strength. In this 60- minute presentation, I share how I’ve learned to optimize my performance from my work with renowned Olympic mental coach, Jean-François Ménard. This work has been life-changing for me and, as such, I am a passionate advocate for mental skills coaching in conjunction with all performing arts training.
Topics Covered:
- The subconscious impact of language on our self-talk
- Optimizing preparation
- Pre-performance routines
The Creative Life: Getting Down to Business
There is a belief amongst up-and-coming musicians that if they just study with the right teacher, practice really, REALLY hard, be accepted to a reputable music school, obtain an advanced degree, and win one or more major competitions, their dream job/career will automatically fall into their lap. Unfortunately, this illusion causes young artists to be complacent about—if not ignorant of—the practicalities and realities of a professional music career. This workshop/webinar will explore how important the development of the business side of your music career is in supporting your artistic endeavours.
LOCAL STREAM MEMBERSHIP AND QUALIFYING ROUND
Federation of Canadian Music Festivals [FCMF] offers Local Music Festivals in non-affiliated provinces to affiliate directly with FCMF!
Affiliation through this Local Stream membership level provides an opportunity for currently ineligible students to participate in our new Local Stream Qualifying Round for the FCMF National Music Festival!
This virtual competition will be hosted by FCMF. Students, if recommended by a local adjudicator, are eligible for participation to seek recommendation to the FCMF National Music Festival.
This membership category and Qualifying Round ensures that Canada’s young amateur musicians, from coast to coast, are able to compete on a national stage.
For more information on how to become an affiliated local music festival, contact Barbara at info@fcmf.org
